New Chairman appointment at Irish Life & Permanent Group Holdings plc.

Embargo: 3.30 pm Wednesday 13 April 2011. Irish Life & Permanent Group Holdings plc announces the appointment of Mr. Alan Cook as Chairman of the Group with immediate effect. Mr. Cook takes over from Ms. Gillian Bowler who announced on 15(th) December last her intention to retire as Chairman and Director once a successor had been appointed.

Mr. Cook has had a long and distinguished career in financial services and public service in the UK and elsewhere. He is a former Managing Director of the UK Post Office, a former Chief Operating Officer of Prudential [UK and Europe] and a former Chief Executive of National Savings and Investments [the Government Agency responsible for raising finance for the UK Government through the retail savings market]. Mr. Cook is currently Chairman of the UK Highways Agency and a non Executive Director of the UK Department of Transport, The Office of Fair Trading and the Financial Ombudsman Service. He is also a Governor of the University of Bedfordshire and Chairman of Action for ME, the leading UK charity supporting those suffering from ME/CFS.

Mr Cook has indicated his intention to step down from his roles with the Office of Fair Trading and the Financial Ombudsman Service in order to devote sufficient time to his new and challenging role as Chairman of the Group.

Speaking today, Kevin Murphy, Group Chief Executive, welcomed Mr. Cook's appointment; "Alan brings enormous experience and skills to the Board and we are looking forward to working with him very much. We're entering a new and challenging phase for our Group and I believe that Alan will play a critical role in helping us to navigate through this period to better times ahead."

Mr. Murphy also paid tribute to outgoing Chairman, Gillian Bowler; "Gillian has made an important contribution to the Group over many years and on behalf of the Board and everyone in the Group I want to thank her for her years of service and wish her every happiness in the future".
