Proxim Wireless Corporation, a global provider of broadband wireless equipment and wholly-owned subsidiary of Terabeam, Inc. (NASDAQ: TRBM), today announced that its outdoor broadband wireless products have been deployed to create the wide area network (WAN) for the Lafourche Parish public school district in Louisiana. The network serves 37 school buildings, making it the largest wireless K-12 school district WAN in the state in terms of number of sites. The network has been designed, installed and maintained by SkyRider Communications, a provider of broadband services to commercial and government entities in Louisiana and surrounding states, and a Proxim Wireless Platinum Partner. In late 2005, the Lafourche Parish school district issued a request for proposal to upgrade the WAN with higher capacity. The existing WAN consisted of leased T1 lines to each of the 37 school buildings, and the 1.5 Mbps capacity as well as the recurring charge for each T1 had become constraints to fulfilling the schools' growing communications requirements. SkyRider submitted a proposal to replace the leased lines with a network based on broadband wireless products from Proxim. Lafourche awarded the project to SkyRider based on the fact that it was offering 16 times as much bandwidth at a lower recurring charge for each wireless circuit compared to the T1 line it replaced. This network was made possible through a combination of Proxim's Tsunami(TM) MP.11 WiMAX products, delivering true throughput of 24 Mbps to each school building, and Tsunami(R).GX point-to-point products, providing backhaul from multiple WiMAX links. Students and school staff are now able to save substantial time in performing data communications tasks, and the school system has increased its electronic data interchange capabilities, as the network now makes it feasible to transmit large files such as standardized tests electronically. Proxim's Tsunami MP.11 is a field-proven product, comprising ruggedized base stations, indoor and outdoor subscriber units and accessories, offering the capabilities of WiMAX for license-free frequency bands worldwide. Key features include: high throughput based on an over-the-air data rate of 54 Mbps; WiMAX Quality of Service to support differentiated delivery of voice, video and data traffic; state-of-the-art security including AES encryption; and support for mobile applications with seamless handoffs at up to 120 miles per hour. Proxim's Tsunami.GX series offers throughput up to 102 Mbps full duplex, carrier-class reliability up to 99.999%, and a choice of indoor-only or indoor-outdoor installations to address a variety of deployment conditions. "I have been very pleased with SkyRider's network services and support," said Britt Ledet, Technology Coordinator, Lafourche Parish School District. "The performance of the network has been outstanding, and their thinking outside the box and can-do attitude have been valuable to us." "Proxim Wireless was the clear leader for the technology to support Lafourche schools," said Wayne Kairdolf, Jr., Wireless WAN Engineer, SkyRider Communications. "Proxim's products deliver better performance than the competition; we can select end-to-end solutions including edge, last-mile and backhaul connectivity from a single vendor; and these systems have a strong track record in the K-12 school district environment."
