When the world’s largest cruise ship, Oasis of the Seas, departs
on its maiden voyage Saturday, December 5, a cadre of electrical
power supply systems from diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton
Corporation (NYSE:ETN) will help keep the ship’s 6,300 passengers
comfortable, safe and entertained.
Oasis of the Seas, the latest addition to the Royal Caribbean
fleet, spans nearly 1,200 feet in length and has 16 passenger
decks. The ship has more than 20 Eaton uninterruptible power system
(UPS) units on board that provide a steady flow of power to its
massive navigation, computer, emergency lighting and
heating/cooling systems as well as its many restaurants, casinos
and theaters.
“The size and scope of technological applications on board this
revolutionary ship pose remarkable challenges to the consistent
flow of reliable, clean and safe power,” said Ed Komoski, president
of Eaton’s Power Quality Division. “Eaton’s industry-leading UPS
units are designed to provide instantaneous back-up power in case
of an outage. That’s important in every critical application, but
especially at sea.”
Built by STX Europe, Oasis of the Seas features a variety of
Eaton’s large-system marine UPS units to protect critical systems
from disruptive power interruptions. Also included in the ship is
Eaton’s power management software for electrical system performance
monitoring and optimization.
“We have been collaborating with Eaton in all of our most
demanding cruise ship projects for more than 10 years,” said Ville
Talsi, system coordinator at STX Europe. “As these types of
large-scale projects typically last more than three years, it is
crucial to have a reliable and trusted partner. Eaton’s
high-quality products and field services around the world have
guaranteed an enjoyable cruise experience for passengers and
uninterrupted operation of the ships’ technology.”
Eaton has a 40-year history of supplying the marine and offshore
industry with power protection solutions. Other critical power
applications using Eaton UPS units include hospitals, data centers
and airports. More information is available at
