Program Trading Jumped Last Week On NYSE Along With Volume

Program trading jumped last week on the NYSE Euronext's (NYX)
New York Stock Exchange, as volume surged following the lightly
traded holiday week.
The daily average was 741.3 million, or 28.9%, out of the 2.57
billion total shares that changed hands. That is up from the prior
week's rate of 26.3%, or 460.6 million of the 1.75 billion shares
that traded on average.
The most active NYSE member firms for program trading last week
was again Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (GS) at 830.3 million shares for
the entire period, followed by Morgan Stanley (MS) at 764 million
and Barclays PLC (BCS) at 410.5 million. All three figures were
significantly higher than the prior week's trading.
Program trading encompasses a wide range of portfolio-trading
strategies involving the purchase or sale of a basket of at least
15 stocks.
