Program trading fell last week on the NYSE Euronext's (NYX) New
York Stock Exchange after volume surged a week earlier.
The daily average was 579.5 million, or 25.9%, out of the 2.23
billion total shares that changed hands. That is down from the
prior week's rate of 28.9%, or 741.3 million of the 2.57 billion
shares that traded on average.
The most active NYSE member firm for program trading last week
was again Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (GS) at 594.2 million shares for
the entire period, followed by Morgan Stanley (MS) at 465.9 million
and Deutsche Bank AG (DB) at 259.3 million, which replaced Barclays
PLC (BCS) in third place. All three figures were significantly
lower than the prior week's trading.
Program trading encompasses a wide range of portfolio-trading
strategies involving the purchase or sale of a basket of at least
15 stocks.
