It is too early to comment on the potential merger between exchange giants Deutsche Boerse AG (DB1.XE) and NYSE Euronext (NYX), a spokeswoman for the European Commission, which has antitrust powers in the European Union, said Friday.

"At this stage, we cant make any comment," Amelia Torres, spokeswoman for competition issues, said during a regular press briefing.

Previous attempts at tie-ups between major exchanges have failed, in part due to fears that the commission or other European regulators would block them.
