NYSE Program Trading Fell Last Week; Overall Volume Down

Program-trading volume fell on the New York Stock Exchange last
week as overall activity also declined, according to the unit of
NYSE Euronext (NYX).
Daily program-trading volume in the week ended July 22 totaled
485.7 million shares, or 28.2% of the average daily total of 1.72
billion. A week earlier, program-trading volume was 583.1 million
shares, or 31.1% of the average total of 1.88 billion.
The most-active NYSE member firm for program trading last week
was Morgan Stanley (MS), followed by Barclays PLC (BCS, BARC.LN)
and Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (GS). All three firms frequently top
the list.
Program trading encompasses a wide range of portfolio-trading
strategies involving the purchase or sale of a basket of at least
15 stocks.
