Square, the payments platform owned by Block, is entering the Canadian cannabis market through a partnership with Jane Technologies, an online-ordering platform for cannabis dispensaries.

Square also said it has started an early-access program for licensed cannabis dispensaries in Ontario, allowing them to test Square's point-of-sale service in stores ahead of a broader roll out.

"At Square, we're always looking to solve sellers' pain points and we know cannabis dispensaries have limited options when it comes to reliable and integrated commerce tools," said Roshan Jhunja, Square's head of retail.

Earlier this week, Square said Chief Executive Alyssa Henry plans to depart on Oct. 2. Block CEO Jack Dorsey will step in to run the unit.
