RNS No 5597w
NORTH MIDLAND CONSTRUCTION PLC
20 May 1999

I would expect that you wish me to make a few comments upon the current
trading position.

Sadly, the first quarter's figures are a disappointment and show a small loss.
This is due to a period of unprecedently high rainfall, which has hampered
operations and a reduced return at site level.

Margins continue to be extremely tight in the mainstream civil engineering
sector and whilst this company is holding it's own, the cable industry is
going through a period of turmoil with mergers and takeovers very much the
flavour. This has resulted in a reduction in volumes for this side of the
business. However, the overall workload is good and the anticipated major
downturn has not occurred. Marketing opportunities are plentiful and this
company has enjoyed success in establishing profitable relationships with
several new "blue chip" clients.

Both our established Building company and new M & E venture, Nomenca, have
started the year well and the figures for both are ahead of budget at this
stage. We have high hopes for both these ventures and North Midland Building
is currently engaged on its largest contract ever at #1.8m for the Tower
Hotel, London.

We are continuing to seek and develop opportunities within the industry, where
the company's skills can provide real benefit to the client without the need
for cut-throat tendering. Success has been achieved and the emphasis will be
on the development of this type of business in the future.

The company possesses a wide range of skills across the industry and maintains
a strong financial position with negligible gearing. It is on this bedrock
that we look to sustain the future growth and look forward to the future with
continuous optimism.

Finally, I would like to thank you, our Shareholders, for your continued
support and confidence, during a difficult time for all small to medium quoted
PLC's, who currently seem to be out of favour with the market.

APPOINTMENT OF DIRECTOR

At the meeting Brian A Evans, Director of the subsidiary building company, was
appointed a Director of North Midland Construction PLC.
