               PORTMAN BUILDING SOCIETY - GROUP FINANCE DIRECTOR





Mark Gibbard has stepped down from his position as Portman's Group Finance
Director.  This follows the overwhelming approval of Portman members for the
proposed merger with Nationwide Building Society.  Mark has been seconded to
Nationwide as Divisional Director, Risk Management, a position he will take up
permanently if the merger is confirmed by the Financial Services Authority.



The Portman Board has appointed Jonathan Westhoff to fill the role of Group
Finance Director until the merger with Nationwide (the effective date of the
merger is expected to be 28 August 2007) following which he will join the Board
of Newcastle Building Society as Finance Director.
