European labor unions assembled under the umbrella of the European Metalworkers' Federation are calling for workers and sub-contractors at steel titan ArcelorMittal (MT) to take part in strikes, work stoppages and demonstrations on Dec. 7.

EMF "are calling on all workers employed by ArcelorMittal and its subcontractors to join them in a European solidarity Action Day in protest against the plant closures, restructuring plans and job cuts which threaten the long-term viability of Europe's leading steelmaker," the federation said in a statement posted on its website late Monday.

ArcelorMittal last month announced plans to permanently close two blast furnaces in Liege, Belgium and has also said it would temporarily idle production capacity at some of its steel plants in Germany, Poland, and Spain due to weaker-than-expected steel demand as end steel consumers take a more cautious approach to purchasing steel, given fears that the European sovereign debt crisis may cause the euro zone to slip into a recession.
