ArcelorMittal Galati, a unit of steelmaker ArcelorMittal (MT), Friday said its heavy plate mill No. 1 will resume production in the next few weeks, after staying idle for more than three years, news agency Mediafax reported.

"We want to increase efficiency and avoid production bottlenecks at plate mill no. 2," said Bruno Ribo, general manager of ArcelorMittal Galati.

Heavy plate production is expected to reach 1 million tons a year once both mills are up and running, Ribo said.

The plate mill no. 1 was shut down in the fall of 2008.

Luxembourg-headquartered ArcelorMittal owns four steel plants in Romania, in Galati, Iasi, Hunedoara and Roman, as well as harbor operator Romportmet Galati and the local unit of construction company ArcelorMittal Construction.
