Sibanye-Stillwater Ltd. said Friday that its mining and
metallurgical operations were largely unaffected by flooding in
Montana, though operations at its Stillwater mine will remain
suspended for around four to six weeks.
The Johannesburg-listed precious metals miner said that several
bridges in the vicinity of its Stillwater mine--which accounts for
60% of its U.S. PGM operations--were damaged in the June 13
flooding, and sections of the primary access road from Nye to the
Stillwater mine have been severely eroded. This has restricted
access to the mine and will require rerouting of water, tailings
and other piping.
Remediation work on the east/west access bridge within the mine
complex has begun and should be completed in around four weeks, the
company said.
Access to the East Boulder mine and Columbus metallurgical
facilities remains intact and both facilities have continued
operating.
"We will continue to work with the local authorities and other
stakeholders to fast-track the recovery of the region and look
forward to resuming operations at the Stillwater section in due
course," Chief Executive Neal Froneman said.
