TDK, a world leader in digital recording solutions, and Rimage
Corporation today announced the introduction of the world's first
thermal printable BD-R Blu-ray Disc media. Using a DVD/CD
compatible thermal printer from Rimage, users can print custom text
and graphics directly on each disc's label-side surface. The discs,
which incorporate TDK's advanced DURABIS 2 hard coating technology,
are on display at TDK booth #C10741 and Rimage booth #SL1843 at the
National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Show, which is taking
place at the Las Vegas Convention Center, April 24-27, 2006. TDK
has partnered with Rimage to optimize its printable surface BD-R
media for use with Rimage's world renowned line of thermal BD-R
disc publishing solutions. "TDK innovations in blue laser recording
and disc surface printing technologies have enabled us to create
the industry's first thermal printable Blu-ray Discs, media that
exceeds the high performance standards set by TDK and Rimage,"
noted Bruce Youmans, TDK Vice President of Marketing. "The new
Thermal Printable BD-R discs are the ultimate recording and
labeling solutions for Rimage's acclaimed line of thermal disc
publishing and duplication systems. Only TDK and Rimage can deliver
the highest level of performance and reliability for professional
thermal applications." "Our partnership with TDK will enable Rimage
to offer its customers the ideal printable BD-R media," noted Manny
Almeida, Chief Operating Officer for Rimage. "We've worked with TDK
to ensure that TDK Thermal Printable BD-R media is perfectly
optimized to deliver failsafe recording and the highest possible
printing quality with Rimage's soon to be released BD-R thermal
disc publishing and duplication systems. Built on a commitment to
excellence and innovation, our partnership with TDK is a win-win
situation for Rimage's professional customer base." TDK will offer
single-layer BD-R (write-once type) Thermal Printable Blu-ray Discs
featuring 25GB capacity in the third quarter of 2006. In the third
quarter, TDK will also introduce dual-layer BD-R 50GB Thermal
Printable Blu-ray Discs. Both versions will offer the highest
compatibility with Blu-ray drives and recorders/players. The
Thermal Printable Blu-ray Discs will be available from TDK with
pricing soon to be announced. Professional Quality Surface Printing
TDK Thermal Printable BD-R has been optimized for use with Rimage's
range of thermal BD-R disc publishing and duplication products by
utilizing Rimage's Everest(TM) thermal retransfer technology which
enables users to create permanent, colorful, high-resolution prints
bonded directly to the surface of thermal printable media. TDK BD-R
media has true WORM (Write Once Read Many) characteristics, making
it ideal for backup use in mission critical applications such as
medical imaging, digital photography and financial record archiving
and publishing. The media is coated with a special
thermal-optimized surface that not only delivers extremely bright,
high-resolution full color images and text, but also prevents
warping - a potential problem with standard thermal surfaces. The
printable surface extends from the outside edge of the media all
the way to the center hub for a fully produced, highly professional
appearance. Wide sputtering and the absence of a stacking ring make
printing quality consistent across the entire disc surface, from
edge to edge. Robust Durability, Superior Reliability Hard coating
technology pioneered by TDK is part of the Blu-ray specification,
but only TDK Blu-ray Discs have DURABIS 2, the industry's most
advanced hard coating technology. DURABIS 2 increases the scratch
resistance of Blu-ray Disc media by a factor of 100, as
demonstrated in rigorous testing. DURABIS 2 also resists
fingerprints to help eliminate errors caused by recording surface
smudges. About TDK TDK Corporation (NYSE: TDK) is a leading global
