The railway will donate a lifesaving Automated External
Defibrillator (AED) to protect the heart health of Calgary area youth every time a competitor
jumps a clear round at the Canadian Pacific Grand Prix
CALGARY, June 9, 2014 /CNW/ - Canadian Pacific (CP) is
proud to once again partner with the world-class equestrian centre
Spruce Meadows and launch its new community investment program - CP
Has Heart - at the Canadian Pacific Grand Prix on Sunday June 15, 2014.
CP will be onsite at Spruce Meadows with the Heart and Stroke
Foundation teaching families how simple it can be to save a life
with CPR and Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs). And every
time a competitor jumps a clear round in the Canadian Pacific Grand
Prix that afternoon, CP will donate lifesaving AED equipment and
training (valued at $10,000) to
protect the heart health of young people in the Calgary-area.
"Father's Day is the perfect day
to launch CP Has Heart, our railroad's new focus on improving
family heart health in communities across North America," said CP CEO Hunter Harrison. "All men, women and children
can benefit from understanding the factors that put our hearts at
risk, what we can do to improve our heart health, and how simple it
is to save a life if the right tools and training are
available."
Approximately 40,000 sudden cardiac arrests occur outside of a
hospital each year in Canada and
the use of an AED combined with CPR prior to the arrival of
emergency medical services can improve survival rates by 75 per
cent - the best chance of saving a life in the event of a cardiac
arrest.
CP is working with the Heart and Stroke Foundation at this
Spruce Meadows event to help enable faster and better cardiac
emergency response in the Calgary
area.
"High school gyms are a focal gathering place for families, just
like community centres and arenas," said Donna Hastings, CEO, Heart and Stroke
Foundation, Alberta, NWT &
Nunavut. "CP's generous gift
through CP Has Heart will fund installation of AEDs in public
places where young people gather. We are proud to partner with CP
to increase the number of AEDs in Calgary and train youth how to use them, to
help save lives right here in Calgary and area."
In addition to demonstrations of CPR and AEDs by the Heart and
Stroke Foundation at the CP Has Heart tent at Spruce Meadows on
Sunday, June 15, there will be
kid-friendly activities, including a miniature jumping course and
the "Little General", CP's new miniature train, will be on the
grounds providing rides to children.
