Alstom SA (ALO.FR) said Thursday that its third-quarter sales rose, while orders reached a new record thanks in part to particularly high service orders.

Sales for the October-December period rose to 2.01 billion euros ($2.29 billion) from a restated figure of EUR1.83 billion a year earlier, the French train maker said.

Alstom said it booked a record EUR3.39 billion in new orders over the quarter, up from EUR1.68 billion in the year-earlier period.

The company said its proposed merger with Siemens AG's (SIE.XE) rail business is on track to close in the first half of 2019, even though the tie-up faces staunch opposition from regulators across Europe.
