The Competition Commission has today published Northern Ireland Electricity’s
(NIE) response to its Provisional Determination in respect of NIE’s Transmission
and Distribution price controls which will apply for the period to September 2017.

NIE is concerned that the Competition Commission’s proposed price control fails
to protect customers’ interests in funding NIE adequately to ensure a safe and
reliable electricity supply.

Whilst NIE welcomes many aspects of the Competition Commission’s Provisional
Determination, it is concerned that an inappropriate balance is being struck
between prices in the short term and the need to fund a network maintained and
developed to the same standards of safety and reliability as the electricity
networks in GB.

The Competition Commission will be holding further hearings to discuss responses
to the Provisional Determination during December. The Competition Commission
will make its Final Determination before 30 April 2014.

The response is available on the Competition Commission’s website at http://
www.competition-commission.org.uk/assets/competitioncommission/docs/2013/
northern-ireland-electricity-price-determination/nie.pdf and will also be
available via NIE’s website at http://www.nie.co.uk/rp5response.
