Grants support students, teachers, first responders and
community members in more than 30 countries
The Motorola Solutions Foundation, the charitable arm of
Motorola Solutions (NYSE:MSI), today announced more than $9 million
in grant funding to charitable and educational organizations around
the world. The grants will impact 3.4 million students, teachers,
first responders and community members, with a focus on women,
underrepresented minorities, people with disabilities and
veterans.
“As a technology company that supports the safety of communities
worldwide, we know our responsibility to support and educate goes
beyond the workplace,” said Matt Blakely, Motorola Solutions
Foundation executive director. “We are proud to support the work of
so many organizations, both through grants and employee
volunteerism.”
This year, a review committee of nearly 300 employees helped
choose the grant recipients – charitable and educational
organizations in more than 30 countries that focus on public safety
and science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education.
“By incorporating input from our global internal review
committee, we were able to choose organizations that had a
strategic connection to our company,” added Blakely. “We relied on
our employees to tell us how the grants would impact the
communities where they live and work.”
Examples of 2017 grant recipients include:
- The National American Red Cross’
Home Fire Campaign, which will enable the installation of smoke
alarms and batteries in at-risk neighborhoods in Illinois, Florida
and California.
- The Chicago Police Memorial
Foundation, which will deliver a suicide prevention seminar for
police officers and implement more effective suicide prevention
practices in everyday law enforcement.
- FIRST (For Inspiration and
Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics, which will
provide approximately 2,000 students with hands-on opportunities to
apply math and science concepts to design, build and test robots in
the United States and four other countries around the world.
- The Consortium of Florida Education
Foundations (CFEF), which will provide educational programming
focused on problem-solving and application of STEM skills for
middle- and high school-students.
- Search and Rescue Unit
Foundation’s National Training Caravan - Advocacy Training
Program, which will offer disaster relief education for local
communities in the Philippines. Team leaders in every participating
family will be trained to save their families in the event of a
disaster.
- Penang Science Cluster (PSC) in
Malaysia, which will support hands-on technology and engineering
programming for students and teachers. Students in the program will
learn design thinking and coding as they build prototypes to solve
community issues.
- Hands On Technology (HoT) in
Central Europe, which will introduce robotics, coding and more to
children ages nine to 16. In small teams, 7,000 students will
program an autonomous robot in the global FIRST LEGO League (FLL)
competition.
- Africa Fire Mission, which will
help provide fire and safety training to local firefighters and
community leaders to increase the effectiveness and sustainability
of fire services in Kenya, Malawi and Zambia.
- Middle East Entrepreneurs of
Tomorrow (MEET) in Jerusalem, Israel, which will engage Israeli
and Palestinian high school students in computer science and social
