Boeing Co. (BA) and IHI Corp. (7013.TO) said Wednesday they will jointly research and develop fuel-cell systems for aircraft use, as the U.S. aircraft maker is stepping up efforts to reduce jet emissions.

The two companies said in separate releases the newly developed systems will be used as power sources for lighting, galley facilities, and other equipment.

The major Japanese heavy machinery maker, IHI, said they aim to have a trial flight of an aircraft with this system by 2013.
