Transaction in Own Securities

Gartmore Smaller Companies Trust p.l.c., managed by Gartmore Investment
Limited, today purchased for cancellation 20,000 Ordinary 25p shares at a price
of 475.0 pence per share.

The purchase represents 0.14% of the Ordinary shares in issue and is the first
purchase of Ordinary shares pursuant to a general authority granted by
shareholders at the Company's Annual General Meeting held on 26 November 2007.

The purchase and cancellation will reduce the number of Ordinary shares in
issue to 13,855,000. The Company holds no shares in Treasury.

Total Voting Rights

As a consequence of the purchase and cancellation, the Company's share capital
comprises 13,855,000 Ordinary shares of 25p each, with each Ordinary share
carrying the right to one vote.

The above figure of 13,855,000 may be used by shareholders as the denominator
for the calculations by which they will determine if they are required to
notify their interest in, or a change to their interest in, the Company under
the Disclosure and Transparency Rules.
