CME Group Inc. said first-quarter earnings rose by 24% on robust growth in trading volumes of options and other financial contracts, as the company benefited from a volatile quarter for markets.

The Chicago exchange operator said net income rose to $711 million, or $1.95 a share, from $574.4 million, or $1.60 a share, a year earlier. Excluding certain items, CME posted adjusted earnings of $2.11 a share.

Revenue rose 7.4% to $1.35 billion, the company said.

The company said average daily volume rose 19% to 25.9 million contracts, with double-digit percentage increases in equity-index, interest-rate and options products. The average rate per contract fell slightly to 64.4 cents.
