Boeing Co.'s 737 MAX has received the green light to resume flights in Europe after almost two years on the ground, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency said Wednesday.

"Following extensive analysis by EASA, we have determined that the 737 MAX can safely return to service," said EASA's Executive Director Patrick Ky. "This assessment was carried out in full independence," he added.

The agency said it is mandating a package of software updates, maintenance checks and crew training among other measures in order for the aircraft to safely return to service. It added it will continue to closely monitor 737 MAX operations.

The Boeing 737 MAX was grounded world-wide in March 2019 following two crashes in which a total of 346 people died.
