WPP PLC (WPP.LN) said Monday that it will merge its Wunderman and J. Walter Thompson agencies, as the world's largest advertising group continues to reshape itself to deal with disruption across the industry.

The London-based company said the newly formed agency will be called Wunderman Thompson and will be led by Mel Edwards, the current global chief executive of Wunderman. Tamara Ingram, CEO of J. Walter Thompson, will become chairman of the new organization, WPP said.

Wunderman Thompson, which will be fully operational in early 2019, will employ more than 20,000 people in 90 markets, its parent said.

In September, WPP merged its creative agency Young & Rubicam with digital-ad firm VML.

WPP is due to launch a new strategy on Dec. 11.
